Despite this ambiguity, Sophie emphasized that under Canada’s self-assessing tax system, taxpayers are obligated to provide the information requested. “While the auditor–taxpayer relationship does have adversarial underpinnings, they want to co-operate with you as much as you need them to co-operate with you,” she explained.

Sophie advised that fostering a spirit of cooperation can lead to more constructive conversations and potentially quicker resolutions.
